Abstract

Data retention policy implementation is important in enterprise databases because organizations must manage how long business, financial, customer, operational, and compliance-related data is stored. Retention policies define rules for preserving, archiving, deleting, and protecting data according to business needs, legal requirements, and storage limitations. Existing literature highlights retention schedules, archival workflows, access control, audit logging, data classification, backup alignment, and secure disposal as major practices in database retention management. However, many organizations still face challenges such as uncontrolled data growth, unclear retention periods, outdated records, compliance risks, high storage costs, and difficulty retrieving archived data. This research is important because weak retention practices can affect database performance, regulatory compliance, data privacy, and long-term information governance. This article discusses data retention policy implementation in enterprise databases, focusing on retention rule design, data classification, archival planning, deletion control, compliance monitoring, audit readiness, and storage optimization. The study concludes that effective retention policy implementation improves data governance, reduces storage pressure, supports compliance, and strengthens enterprise database management.
